Painting brick?

As you may have seen, we have some 1970s multicolored brick that dominates our living room. It's not my favorite part of the house, and we've contemplated painting it. But if we do, I know there's no going back.
This is a photo from before we bought the house, with the other owner's furniture.

This week, we've staying at a beach house in Manistee, Michigan (which is absolutely a wonderful spot and beautifully decorated). And what have they done? Painted their fireplace - which makes us rethink our decision.
Fireplace at our wonderful beach house.

Thoughts?

I like them both...but I vote for staying with the brick! I always liked the multicolored brick look, and I don't think it looks too '70s.

Paint it! I love the cottage look of white painted brick. So fresh and clean :)

Hey, when is your due date?

hmm - I think if you planned on staying in the house long term its an issue to really comptemplate - but it could sort of fall under the "not your problem" if you leave after a couple of years - I like the painted white look, what color would you paint it - I agree with alison that both look good :)

The jury is still out on the paint, but I'll keep you updated. We'd most likely to do the walls and brick the same color - something creamy and neutral.

I'm due October 7th, which seems like it's coming up fast now!

Hey Sher! Liking your blog... Have you guys thought about Tiling over the brick or stone? I think lovely Paul helped us tile our fireplace in Commerce. I will try and share a before and after pix for you. We also have a painted brick fireplace in A2 now. I wish it weren't but I don't know what the brick looks like either.

I'd go with the paint, the dark brick is so dominant...
